1.2 What is Technology?

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, technology has a few definitions including: 1) the practical application of knowledge especially in in a particular area, 2) a capability given by the piratical application of knowledge, 3) a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge, and 4) the specialized aspects of a particular field of endeavor.[5]

1.3 How do different types of attitudes cause and effect personal life?

Three examples of personal life that can be effected by different types of attitudes include: intimate/dating relationships, friendships, and family.
  • Intimate/dating relationships verses friendships: In most cases, the people involved in a friendship are not looking for someone to spend the rest of their life with, romantically, within the group of friends. A person with a serious attitude towards dating would be very different from someone with has a serious attitude towards just being friends. These attitudes can clash or prosper given the worst or best situation. Most friendships involve different types of attitudes to keep the friendship as entertaining and eventful as possible. In an intimate relationship, the persons involved are responsible for keeping their spouses attitude as positive as it can be. Some attitudes can clash, and some can mesh really well in both friendship and intimate relationships.
  • Families are the most simple of relationships, yet they can also become the most complicated when it comes to expressing one's attitude. For example: if someone's attitude is not as positive or as compatible to your liking in a friendship or an intimate relationship, you can remove yourself from contact with that particular person or persons. In a family, these people are going to be in your life for a very long time and you will be required to make sacrifices of your own personal well being and happiness to suffice a family members. On the contrary, you might amplify your attitude to care and attempt to resolve any disagreement, this is very common for family members to do so.

2.2 Employees' Attitude towards Technology in the workplace

  • The driving force to accomplish achievement their goals. Many businesses seldom participate in B2B become more active and motivate participants online.

A wise woman, Eleanor Roosevelt, once said," The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams."[8]
I have based my entire college life on this saying in order to keep focused on the important things in my life. I am sure everyone has their own set of goals including the hope to be somebody significant one day. I am no different from them. A couple years ago when I decided on a business major, I was not sure if that was the correct goal for me. I realize now that working in the world of business is all I ever wanted to do as I get more experienced in it. I have been working very hard to keep my focus on graduating and becoming an important person in the business industry.

Technology in workplace helps get more attention to audiences/employees. Companies are using technologies to expand their sales and increase revenue. Clients will feel more comfortable when presenter using the power point to explain the drives of the company. This method helps to save time for both customers and company.

Company must be aware of the potential hindrances technology can occur in the process of taking away time issues and troubleshoots. If the businesses and customers are not familiar with the high-tech learning process, it can lead to miscommunication, unclear information, and vague idea.

3. Technology and expression of attitude

3.1 Choosing the channel

3.1.1 Emerging technology offers many choices when selecting the channel to send a message
  • Requires little to no technology
    • Face-to-face
    • Letters/office memo
    • Requires technology
      • Skype
      • E-mail
      • Office Communicator
      • Telephone/texting
Choosing the right channel with which to deliver a message has a great impact on how the intended attitude and message are received by the target audience. For example, it would be hard to express sarcasm or extreme anger through a text message limited to 160 characters, and these attitudes should be saved for face-to-face conversation or the technological equivalent of Skype.

3.2 Expression of attitude

3.2.1 How attitude is expressed through technology

  • E-mail
    • Difficult to convey emotion because people rely on verbal and nonverbal cues to receive complete messages
  • Instant Messaging
    • Use of emoticons (smiley face - J, sad face - L) somewhat help the process of delivering a sense of the sender’s attitude through technology. However, instant messages do not properly portray attitude because shorthand is informal, message can be easily misinterpreted and limited character spaces available.
  • Telephone
    • Voice to voice communication over the telephone is a good way for attitude to be expressed using technology. The receiver can clearly hear the voice fluctuations and can relate to the attitude of the sender. However, it is still lacking the nonverbal communication component which completes the communication process.
  • Skype(or other forms of video chat)
    • Skype is roughly the technology equivalent of face-to-face communication. The receiver of a message over Skype can clearly see the emotion and attitude on the speaker’s face whether they are expressing happiness, disappointment, sarcasm, etc.

4. Assessing work attitudes due to technology

4.1 Work-life balance

4.1.1 Disconnecting or "Unplugging"
  • The ability or inability to stop working after you have completed your work day.
    • Why is it so easy not to disconnect?
      • Ease of access to work related communication.
      • Stress of a deadline that has to be met.
      • On going problem at work that needs to be resolved but cannot be.
      • Do you usually work out of your home?
        • If so it is even more difficult to disconnect.
  • All of these items are clear examples of why we do not disconnect from work. With everyone having a smartphone in their pocket, why not stay connected right? This is wrong. Cases show that up to 55 percent of people who take time off for vacation or just because, do not come back to work feeling rejuvenated. The ease of getting into your pocket to check your phone is one way of not disconnecting.Bringing your laptop, checking your email, smartphone, or work phone are all ways to stay connected, when you are "on vacation".[10]
  • Some companies are even aware of this, and are encouraging employees to stay unplugged while on vacation. The employees are coming back still stressed about the issues they have to resolve at work and are thus unable to relax on time off and come back just as stressed as before.[11]

4.2 Relationships at work

  • Positives. Attributes of IM that make it a valuable asset to a work environment.
    • Make fast communication easier.
    • Can easily know status of employees by "status" they put on IM screen
      • Ex. busy, on lunch, back in 10, in meeting, away, offline.
    • Know the answer to a question within seconds as opposed to emails.
    • Allow for groups or teams to work in long distant situations easier using addition forms of IM such as Skype.
  • Negatives. Attributes of IM that make it a liability to relationship ships in the work environment.
    • Unapproved communication variables may be leaked, such as slander
    • Context can be distorted in some cases.
    • Work relationships may cross boundaries due to ease of communication.
    • Employees who do not like each other may find communication channel to be inappropriate.
    • Easily started rumors
        • It is obvious that face to face communication is needed in some if not most instances, but the use of technology is also crucial to sustain the current work environment. Technology does not always mean using an instant messaging service to communicate. It would also include any time of man made device or service used to aid in the work flow process.
        • Emotion is a very tricky quality of the human and needs to be treated with care. Technology tends to cut down the emotional factor in giving a message to a coworker or employee. Managers may find it non personal to involve technological ways of communication all the time. It is good to get out of the cubical and get human interaction. Eliminating the technology will only increase the relationship, whether good or bad.

4.3 Satisfaction of knowing how to use technology in your favor in the workplace.

4.3.1 Expanding use of technology

  • Technology is expanding into many different fields of work. The medical field now relies on technology more than ever.
    • Go into any ordinary doctors office now, and you will see a computer. The nurse or doctor will no longer use a pen and paper to write down what you say. They will document everything into a computer. This is using technology in the workplace. If they did not know how to use that technology they would not be able to do their job.
    • Know go into that same doctors office, with a new employee that does that know how to use the equipment that well. The employees attitude towards it whether you see it or not is different. Knowing how to use technology in the workplace makes a huge impact on an employees attitude towards his or hers job.
    • When you are satisfied with your ability to do your job, your attitude will increase in general. This does not include things that could be bothering you outside the workplace. A higher work attitude will lead to increase joy in your job. If the employee that did not know how to use the technology never got any better at understanding it, they would less likely stay in the position due to a poor attitude on understanding the technology involved in her job.
    • Job satisfaction leads to
      • Higher job satisfaction
      • More organizational commitment
      • More OCB's or organizational citizenship behaviors
